Delta Dunarii – Info-delta

The Danube Delta (3446 km²), largely in Dobrogea, Romania and partly in Ukraine, is the second largest and best-preserved of the European deltas. The Danube Delta entered UNESCO World Heritage in 1991, being classified as a biosphere reserve nationwide in Romania and as a national park in the IUCN international taxonomy. It overlaps both sites of community importance Danube Delta (SCI site) and Danube Delta (maritime area); as well as the special protection areas Beştepe – Mahmudia and the Danube Delta and the Razim – Sinoie Complex. The Danube Delta site (since 21 May 1991) is protected by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands as a wetland of international importance. The National Park includes the natural reserves: Doloşman Castle, Histria Fortress, Complex Sacalin Zătoane, Grindul and Răducu Lake, Chituc Grindul, Grindul Lupilor, Popina Island, Lake Potcoava, Caraorman Forest, Letea Forest, Roşca – Buhaiova, Weddings – Histria, Belciug Lake, Rotundu Lake, Erenciuc Ariniş, Periteaşca – Leahova Complex, Nebunu Lake, Babadag – Codru Forest, Ghiunghiurmez Hill and Murighiol Falls.

The Danube Delta is limited to the south-west of the Dobrogea plateau, north of Bessarabia, and to the east it flows into the Black Sea. The Danube Delta is crossed by the 45 ° latitude N parallel and the 29 ° meridian, E longitude. To the north, the Chilia and Musura arms form the border with Ukraine. The Delta occupies 5050 km² of Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex, of which 732 km² belongs to Ukraine, the Romanian Delta having an area of ​​2540 km². It is framed by adjacent limes and lakes and contains hundreds of lakes between the arms, of which some dozens of large sizes. Due to the 67 million tons of Danube Danube Danube, the Danube Delta grows annually by approximately 40 m². The Danube, reaching Pătlăgeanca, bifurts: Chilia to the north and Tulcea to the south, later to Furca Sfântu Gheorghe Turkish Çatal Çedırlez sometimes translated into Romanian “Ceatal Sf. Gheorghe”) is divided into Sulina Arm and Sfântu Gheorghe arm. The Chilia arm, forming the border with Ukraine, transports along its course, with a length of 104 km², 60% of the Danube’s waters and alluvia. The Sulina arm is located in the middle of the Delta and, unlike Chilia, has a recurrent course, being permanently dredged and maintained for seagoing vessel navigation. It has a length of 71 km and carries 18% of the Danube water volume. The course of the Sfântu Gheorghe arm is oriented to the southeast, and runs 112 km, carrying 22% of the Danube’s flow. At spill form the Sacalin islands considered a beginning of a secondary delta. The Danube Delta (except the secondary delta of the Chilia branch) is traditionally a part of Dobrogea, but in Antiquity and the Middle Ages the seaside was much farther west (between Chilia Veche and Murighiol in the time of Strabon, between Periprava and Dranov Lake in the Byzantine era) , so that the historical maps representing Dobrogea comprising the entire present Delta are false geomorphological.
